Further plans in for new Woolwich pub

Well here’s one that risen from the dead.

Antic have submitted yet more plans to convert two buildings on Powis Street in a pub. The last major plan was in 2020 and the first almost 10 years ago.

As seen six years ago. Both this and unit to right would be pub under plans

The site at 132-136 has seen nothing happen since initial plans were approved all the way back in 2014. This latest application covers proposed materials.

A mural currently adorns the building installed as part of a number painted across the town.

Mural on building frontage

It sits beside the art deco former co-op now converted to flats and near opposite Travelodge.

Many fantastic buildings sit at this end of Woolwich. There’s some wonderful detailing on the proposed pub but its in a sorry state right now.

Antic previously had a pub on General Gordon Square, though the Woolwich Equitable closed after issues with rent.

This latest application seeks “change of use from retail (A1) to a Public House (A4) at ground floor and basement and 4 self-contained flats (C3) on the 1st-3rd floors together with construction of a second floor rear extension, replacement of the shopfront.”

Layout

A kitchen is proposed with the pub entrance sitting to the left of the frontage. Toilets would be in the basement.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • If you build it they will come…

  • It will be good to see new businesses at thus end of Powis Street. Bringing empty buildings back in to use again. However if the pubs gets planning permission and opens will the customers come. I guess a lot will be down to the pubs prices, how the pub is managed and the cost of living crisis. I wish every business planning to open good luck and great success for the future. Greenwich Council are looking to attract more people to Woolwich in the evenings and at the weekends.
