Tesco plan new Plumstead store

A new application has been submitted by Tesco to open on Swingate Lane in Plumstead.

This would be the company’s second shop in the town with another unit on Lakedale Road near the High Street.

They also have two shops in Woolwich with an application for a third – which as of yet has not opened.

The site housed a Post Office before it moved. The Co-op previously gained approval to open on site in 2021.

Details of the proposal can be found on Greenwich Council’s planning website here.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • The existing shop has been closed for about two years now and the post office moved further down the parade. There has been work carried out inside the shop but that came to a halt some time ago.

  • There’s an error in this report. The current Swingate Lane shop does not include a post office (despite the ATM sign in the picture). The post office is further down in that line of shops.

  • Fantastic. Have been waiting for the Co-Op to open on that site, and now I see it will be a Tesco Express, which I think is preferable. Greenwich have approved the plans, according to their website, so hopefully it will open soon.
