Erith shopping centre sees another retailer close as The Works shuts

Erith shopping centre has seen retailer The Works close.

It’s the latest shop to shut within the 1960s centre which is a shadow of its former self.

The Riverside Centre has lost various outlets include a cafe in recent years.

Empty units in the centre

A recent planning application for one unit being let on a short term basis revealed that the sites new owners are looking to redevelop the site.

When that was covered some stated it wouldn’t happen, though given its ongoing struggles and new owner’s own statements that certainly seems the aspiration.

BYM purchased the site in 2022 and state on their site:

“There is significant development potential at Erith Riverside Shopping Centre. BYM Capital is exploring opportunities for a large scale, residential-led redevelopment and repositioning project in collaboration with the London Borough of Bexley.”

This is however unlikely to happen in the short term nor is it guaranteed to include existing homes on site, with a large amount of the site comprising parking and retail alone.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Such a shame to see a another retailer closing shops. Losing The Works shop in Erith is another blow to the shopping Centre and the Erith area.
I can see this site becoming a residential site or mixed use site with possibly a supermarket and housing.
