Sushi takeaway set for Abbey Wood

So here’s one of the more surprising planning applications seen a while.

Plans are in for a sushi/fish and chips takeaway on Abbey Wood estate at the former newsagent on Eynsham Drive.

It’s planned directly next door to an existing chip shop and Chinese takeaway. The newsagent is a bit legendary if you grew up in Abbey Wood. Run by Jay for donkey’s years, it was a prime spot for a 20p pick ‘n mix and just about everything else.

Many of memory of going in to the amazing sweet section. Then buying those odd hexagonal bus tickets every week for years introduced just before the Oyster became a thing.

For nostalgia’s sake I took a few photos of the place recently including one by peering through the window.

Memories

Stock remained but the planned refurbishment didn’t seem to go anywhere.

The chip shop next door is also very well known locally and home to the 180 and 280 specials. They retained their names long after inflation took prices above £1.80 and £2.80.
