New Thamesmead library due to open summer 2021

Peabody have revealed that Thamesmead’s new library will open in around 18 months in summer 2021.

The new library will be around six years late when it completes. Since the former library closed, a temporary facility has existed tucked away near the base of an elevated roundabout and away from homes.

Winning design

The building will be a centrepiece beside Southmere Lake and a new square at what was Tavy Bridge. There’s much to like about the design.

Open and airy

Peabody took many years to get moving at Thamesmead sites after taking over Gallions Housing Association. They ran a competition for a library building and chose a winner in 2017. After deciding they then reduced the library in size and removed a gym space when submitting plans for approval. Total floor space reduced from 1670 square metres to 1349 square metres.

You probably won’t be surprised to hear much media coverage of the new library and opening date doesn’t mention long delays nor reduction in floor size.
