Another fire hits Woolwich: 125 firefighters now battle blaze

Numerous reports are coming in of yet another big fire in Woolwich as sweltering weather continues.

The fire appears to be at Woolwich Common near Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

70 fire fighters are attending the blaze which is the size of four football pitches.

5pm UPDATE: Road closures are occurring and the 122 bus is diverted.

5:40pm UPDATE: The number of firefighters is up to 125. More buses are on diversion – “routes 89, 122, 161, 178, 244, 291, 386, 469 and 486 are all on diversions due to grass fire, and Woolwich Common and surrounding road now closed.”

Nearby Woolwich Fire Station closed in 2014 and recently saw approval for conversion to housing.

11pm UPDATE. The fire was under control by around 8pm. Firefighters remain on scene dampening down.

  • The idea of leaving the common to grow wild over the Summer is crazy. Would be fine if sheep were grazing. Cut it now.
