5:40pm UPDATE: The number of firefighters is up to 125. More buses are on diversion – “routes 89, 122, 161, 178, 244, 291, 386, 469 and 486 are all on diversions due to grass fire, and Woolwich Common and surrounding road now closed.”
Nearby Woolwich Fire Station closed in 2014 and recently saw approval for conversion to housing.
11pm UPDATE. The fire was under control by around 8pm. Firefighters remain on scene dampening down.
The idea of leaving the common to grow wild over the Summer is crazy. Would be fine if sheep were grazing. Cut it now.
