Further homes planned at Woolwich town centre pub building

Thames House in Woolwich could see additional flats built on site according to a newly submitted plan.

The building is home to Wetherspoon’s The Great Harry which occupies the ground floor and part of the first floor.

A new proposal sees 11 flats on upper floors and follows a separate proposal for a rooftop extension approved in September 2026 following an earlier 2024 rejection. Two additional storeys will be built including seven homes as part of that.

Approved in September 2026

Now comes the plan for lower floors by MRI Woolwich Ltd. Areas on upper floors not in pub use have been offices for some time. The applicant seeks to use permitted development rights with the Planning Statement noting:

“It is acknowledged that an Article 4 Direction came into force on 8th August 2023, removing Class MA prior approval permitted developments rights, including within the designated Major Centre of Woolwich.

“However, the map which forms part of that Article 4 Direction confirms that the application site does not fall within the defined area of that Direction and accordingly our client is able to avail of Class MA prior approval permitted development rights on this site.”

Should both conversion and extension proceed a total of 18 flats will be constructed. Another far larger housing development is underway nearby at Woolwich Central.

Another development at General Gordon Square

Opposite The Great Harry sits the Island Site which also sees approved development.

Though after many years and revised plans nothing has commenced.

There’s much going on or proposed in Woolwich, and on the other side of General Gordon Square demolition work is underway for a project behind the new Woolwich Waves leisure centre which will feature 558 homes.

The former Bull Tavern and adjacent shops are now fully demolished.

  • Hi

In my opinion the more housing within the twon centre the better…
Too many towns have what can only be described as dead centres…buses stop early and the centre contains nothing to draw people in…
Luckily Woolwich is a main interchange and being surrounded by housing which can only bode will in the future…
I notice very few shop premises are empty for long…so the demand exists…
Shame we don’t see an extensive range of entertainment…apart from swimming and the gym
    Think the town needs more

    • Just throwing up housing left right and centre without any holistic planning is poor planning in my opinion.
The town centre isn’t going to improve by adding more housing.
The town centre is poor because of a significant amount of people bringing it down (anti-social behaviour, crime, local demographic), lack of maintenance from the council (street furniture, litter, flytipping etc) and really tacky shops for naff shop fronts in interiors.
