Work starts at Ropeyards development in Woolwich

It appears construction work is starting on 663 homes in Woolwich along Beresford Street.

Berkeley Homes’ site named Ropeyards sits on the former Maribor Park. The site was cleared for some months though action on site didn’t look too busy however a piling rig has now appeared.

Outline approval was first given 14 years ago with detailed plans only emerging many years later, which were approved in 2024. The site will see seven buildings in total with a green link between the Thames and Woolwich town centre.

The tallest block will top out at 18 floors.

Overview of site.

Currently the section of a future green link closest to Woolwich town center is being used to house a temporary building used as a site office by Berkeley.

A planning submission in late 2025 stated Ropeyards would be complete by July 2029.

This will see 430 student rooms with the first set to be occupied this coming autumn.

Another site now underway in the town is Woolwich Central, with the first block’s core in front of Tesco now visible above hoardings.

Other projects on the cards include the Brookhill estate redevelopment, housing behind the new leisure centre and approved plans on Macbean Street almost opposite Ropeyards.

  • This is good news as the new homes are needed. However’ there is no real mention of infrastructure improvements providing services to the new homes and surrounding communities. We need to see more GP Surgeries, Dentist, Nurseries, Hospitals, Schools, shops, restaurants and open spaces for people have outside space to use and socialise with friends and neighbours..Especially in areas of high density housing.
We also neeed to see improvements to local bus services and other transport networks to meet an ever increasing demand. As most new developments encourage residents to be car free with very limited car parking spaces which would also need to provide parking spaces for disabled parking..

  • Absolutely we need major improvements in infrastructure especially NHS services and public transport..
We seeing bus services frequencies regularly on local bus routes and bus routes across Greater London where major redevelopments are on going with thousands of new homes being built. On top of more student blocks to house hundreds of students. More new homes ate also being planned for the future..
NHS services are at breaking point with patients hospital appointments and procedures being cancelled on a regular basis. It is still near impossible to get a GP appointment thar alone a face to face appointments.
So although the new homes are very much welcomed we do need to see infrastructure improvements as CDT so rightly points out.

  • Ditto Cannot agtee with you more CDT and Kay M.. we must see improved infrastructure and amenities put in place to support the residents moving on to new developments. The students moving to the area to move in new to the new student accommodation and the neighbouring community..
It will also be great to see consttruction start on the spray street development, Macbean Street development and the island Business Centre development on Wellington Street bringing more new homes to Woolwich.

They have all made some vety valid points which I echo. We must also see the infrastructure improvements. Tbis also includes the sewers and drainage systems to cope witb a growing demand from the new developments..
