Bexleyheath town centre project planned using TfL funds

Bexleyheath town centre is set to see changes as part of a town center improvement project.

An area of Townley Road off the Broadway was proposed but been on hold since 2023.

Early ideas and not final design

Now it’s underway again though an early stage. An image showing a potential design is at an early stage.

It’s not really a bad space at all as things stand. As ever with town center projects, don’t go mad and put in something that’ll never be maintained from day one, becomes an eyesore then removed shortly after.

Funds

What remains to be seen is the exact total budget and extent of work.

A tender was recently issued covering the early stage of the scheme which totals £138,000 including VAT.

Looking down Townley Road and the Broadway ahead

An update on the project is given in a report from Bexley Council’s leader before a planned meeting tonight, where Cllr David Leaf states:

“In Bexleyheath, a lead consultant has now been chosen to progress design work for the Townley Road Public Realm Improvements Project.

“The area is a key gateway into the town centre and the scheme will see enhancements to walking and cycling facilities as well as traffic calming, new planting and street furniture, enabled through TfL and Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding.”

Townley Road runs from Albion Road in the town centre with Bexley Central Library to one side and an entrance to Bexleyheath shopping centre on the other. A number of bus routes call including the 269, SL3, B13 and B14.

  • I see they are getting rid of the disabled spaces again. They got rid of them in Sidcup and now here.

Sadly i think the Government and society ate becoming ageist and anti disabled.
They forget the contributions we have made to income tax and national insurance for over 50 yesrs while working..

  • So this is what Bexleyheath town centre could see if changes do happen and perhaps to see the high street and the town centre pedestrianized. And local traffic would have to be diverted around Bexleyheath town centre that could cause more congestion.

  • Stupid idea all them cars that use that entrance to get on the Broadway for the market and other things will have to use the entrance at Asda witch will cause traffic at that end. 👏well done on causing more traffic when not necessary

    • There’s no evidence of that yet. Wait and see what is revealed then respond to the consultation.

  • So basically there are plans to pedestrianize Townley Road and the Broadway in Bexleyheath town centre. With traffic having to be diverted around the town centre.
