Plumstead road changes now in full swing at two sites

Two projects in Plumstead which are seeing street layouts changed are now well underway both on the High Street and Plumstead Corner.

Works on the High Street near Banockburn school were the first to begin, with wider paving now in place and a new zebra crossing though it’s not entirely complete given it lacks beacons.

Widened footways are outside the petrol station just out of shot on the left.

One of the two bus stops here results in buses blocking the crossing when they stop. It was mentioned bus stops (or just one) would be moved.

Wider footways

There’s currently two either side of the school’s car park entrance.

A short distance east at Plumstead Corner at a spot where the High Street meets Wickham Lane the road is also being altered.

Road changes

A new zebra crossing is to be installed on the eastern arm of the roundabout, with changes to the existing zebra crossing seen above alongside a wider pedestrian island and footways plus resurfaced road and road markings.

Further changes along Plumstead High Street will be made outside the railway station as well as the one-way system.

Road narrowing at Plumstead Corner

Narrowing the road won’t work too well if people park and block the road which is an all too common occurrence on Plumstead High Street. It’s often a pain keeping down there as buses are held up by parking.

In addition the police often park their vans and cars in the spot now removed given it’s meters from Plumstead police station. Whether that’s as so many other police stations have closed I’m not sure, but we’ll see how it shakes out when complete.

  • Hopefully the changes to the road layouts on Plumstead High Street and at Plumstead Corner will make the roads safer for motorist pedestrians and cyclists.
Wider footways are very much needed. Lately pavements seemed to have been getting narrower especially around some new developments..Making it difficult for pedestrians to pass each other and making difficult for parents with buggies and wheelchair users.
I hope when the road layout is altered by Plumstead Station and i hope the parking issues in this area will be tackle properly. You often see cars doubled parked or parked badly blocking the road and delaying buses.
.Traffic Wardens often turn a blind eye here and concentrate on other areas of the Borough. This needs to stop and all motorist and pakkng issues need to be dealt with fairly by the Parking Wardens

  • I have to agree with Graham. I believe the improvements will improve Plumstead High Street and Plumstead Corner for both motorist and pedestrians.
The parking issues around Plumstead Station have been ignored by Greenwich Council Parking Services and local Councillors and MP”s for years. Despite the issued constantly being raised with them.
I do not believe the issues are caused by Station users but by others using nearby amenities in the areas who think parking rules do mot apply to them causing issues and delays for other motorists..
