Catford Mews cinema to reopen this summer

Catford Mews cinema is set to reopen this summer under a new operator Lewisham Council have revealed today.

Castle Cinema is taking on the site following closure in 2024. Lewisham Council stated previous operator The Really Local Group had run up arrears of more than £650,000 before the plug was pulled.

It’ll be a sister venue to The Castle Cinema in Hackney when it reopens with an emphasis on independent cinema. The bar on site will also be operated by Castle as will a food/cafe space accessible from Winslade Way.

Catford Mews first opened in 2019 in a former Poundland unit. The reopened site will be known as 32 Winslade Way.

A website has been created but as of yet there’s little to go on except a newsletter to sign up to.

Castle’s site in Homerton in Hackney begun life back in 2016 with a Kickstarter. They reopened an art deco cinema to the public in 2017.

Asher Charman, co-founder of The Castle Cinema, said:

“We know how much this venue means to Catford, and we’re honoured to be part of its next chapter. Our goal is to bring The Castle’s independent heart to 32 Winslade Way, pairing a world-class film programme with a relaxed, welcoming bar and cafe.

We’re building more than just a cinema; we’re creating a space for culture and connection, for everyone. From Parent & Baby screenings and LGBTQ+ events to curated strands celebrating Black cinema and local heritage, we want our programme to reflect the true diversity and energy of Catford.

We’re excited to build a vibrant social hub where the whole community feels at home!”

Reopening of Catford Mews follows the announcement last week that a nine-screen cinema in Lewisham is to be operated by Arc cinema.
