Lewisham give Deptford High Street a deep clean

Deptford High Street has been seeing a deep clean in recent days by Lewisham Council.

The move follows the council pulling plans to pedestrianise part of the High Street.

Announcing the move to pause prior ideas, Lewisham announced a number of other measures including:

  • Deep cleaning and removal of graffiti
  • Removing street clutter such as old phone boxes, damaged signs and poles
  • Extra enforcement to tackle illegal parking and anti-social behaviour
  • Improved waste and fly-tipping management
  • Extra bins
  • Additional planting in the area including new sustainable drainage systems and rain gardens
  • Improved lighting especially under the railway
  • Enhanced signage and wayfinding
  • Installing cycle hangars

Deep cleaning is a relatively quick and easy win as are quite a few of the others items listed.

Artmongers are also currently sprucing up the “Deptford pearls” mural with further dates on Monday 6th, Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th of October between 10 am to 6 pm.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • I think it’s my favourite street in the entire world. Drenched in history and an amazing cross section of modern day London.
No matter how deep this clean, the street will always be gritty, interesting and colourful, no matter how many extra bins! 😋

  • Great work by Lewisham Council !
An example Greenwich Council could learn from !
So they got rid of old phone boxes . We have several of those in Greenwich town centre but have been told they are Listed and cannot be removed.
Some are still owned by BT and in a bad way , others have been bought by some hot drinks company but they are empty and full of rubbish.
Mmmm – food for thought !

I haven’t been to Deptford for a while and will wander down the high street after looking at the art installations now that the sewer works have been completed. Will I be able to spot the differences? Many of the shopfronts are also in poor condition, but I think the tenants would rather this than have them upgraded at the cost of higher rent.

  • They’ve been keeping high street residents awake every night for over 2 weeks as they jet wash the streets from 10pm until later than 4:30am some nights. Complaints have been ignored and cases closed, I can’t get anyone to listen! This is a highly residential high street and it’s impossible to sleep, even with ear plugs 😩
