Woolwich fire reaches one hectare in size

A grass fire has broken out on Woolwich Common today reaching a hectare in size.

London Fire Brigade have 60 firefighters on site alongside eight fire fighting vehicles.

One is a Wildfire Response Vehicles on trial which can carry water alongside “backpack blowers” and misting lance technology.

A drone is also in use on site.

According to the LFB control Officers took 25 calls starting at 11:01 and mobilised crews from East Greenwich, Plumstead and Eltham fire stations.

2:30pm UPDATE: The fire is now out and damping down is underway. In total four hectares of grass was impacted.

  • It was worrying that the fire crews had no idea how to get the fire engines close to the fire.

    Rather than the council wanting to widen Stadium Road by cutting down mature trees to create a cycle lane it would be better to improve and extend the existing footpaths/cycle routes with designated access points for the fire brigade.

    It was interesting to see the grass being cut today in the area between the burnt area and the main east/west path. It is common sense to create fire breaks on the common.
