Southwark give update on Community Infrastructure Levy funded transport improvements
A report drawn up Southwark council details where revenue from new developments across the borough is to be spent on transport projects.
Expanding Elephant and Castle tube station features heavily with £71.5 million provided via the Community Infrastructure Levy from new development put towards a new step free tube entrance linking the Northern Line with any Bakerloo Line extension.

Southwark has now received sufficient CIL receipts to meet total costs of tube station work at Elephant and Castle with additional funding heading to other projects including “match funding of investment by bodies such as Network Rail and TfL in key transport projects such as Peckham Rye Station and Elephant and Castle overground station”.
That’ll be the Thameslink station which thus far has seen minimal investment despite rapid changes locally.

Nunhead station will see £50,000. Peckham Rye station is to see £1 million.
A new station square will be created outside the station bringing its attractive frontage back into view and alleviating congestion.
Demolition works are scheduled to begin in October 2025 with completion by October 2026. Network Rail are also assisting, with other improvements such as “new lifts to all platforms and accessible toilets, wider platforms, larger passageways, new lifts and staircases and improved integration with the surrounding public realm, including better access into the station”.

In addition the council have agreed for allocate match funding for active travel schemes for pedestrians and cyclists with external investment by bodies such as TfL.
The council are also set to allocate £1 million adding to £9 million from TfL for “Bus Priority Network works along the key strategic corridor from South Circular to London Bridge.”
In total £29,506,270 of Strategic CIL funding is currently available for allocation.
