Cutty Sark DLR closure: Greenwich foot tunnel site not being updated

Cutty Sark DLR station has now seen the shutters pulled down for up to a year as work begins fixing all four troublesome escalators.

With no services stopping passengers have two choices to the area: Greenwich DLR and Southeastern station or Island Gardens DLR station across the Thames connected via the Greenwich foot tunnel.

And that’s the suggestion some at TfL have been giving out – yet the foot tunnel is once again playing up with its faulty lifts.

However if you check the status of the foot tunnel on Greenwich Council’s website it shows no update for two weeks since 19th May.

Site not updated for two weeks at time of writing

As seen in the screenshot reliability is generally pretty woeful at Greenwich though better than Woolwich where one lift has been out of action since August 2022.

Now more than ever is the time to be updating the foot tunnel website on a regular basis to give the public an idea of whether its usable.

Cutty Sark station is one of the busiest on the DLR network with 7.63 million journeys in 2023. A fair few visitors will consider using Island Gardens and the foot tunnel – particularly if advised by TfL.

Yet when reaching the lifts some may find – particularly the elderly, disabled and those with children in buggies – that they’re once again out of action thanks to a lack of up to date, reliable information.

  • When I went through the foot tunnel a couple of weeks ago the sign at the south end said both lifts were working, yet when I got to the north end the lift was out of action and had clearly been so for some time. Imagine someone pushing a wheelchair user through the tunnel only to have to turn round at the other end. They’d be apoplectic, and who could blame them.

  • I use the DLR to get to Canary Whalf then jump on the 277 to Hackney but discovered if I go through the foot tunnel I can get the 277 at Isle of Dogs! Great I thought! However the lift on the north side has been out of order for a while now and there’s no update. Due to leg injury doing the stairs at this stage is a no, no! Very frustrating and I was informed it’s down to Tower Hamlets to update!!

  • Get off at greenwich and walk back is also an option. Slightly longer walk maybe but no elevator issues.
