Lewisham Council moving ahead with Sustainable Streets project changes
Lewisham’s Mayor and Cabinet are set to discuss the borough’s Sustainable Streets at a meeting next week.
A review of parking zones is set to be approved covering Blackheath, Lewisham Central, Ladywell, Rushey Green, Brockley, Lee Green and Deptford.
These areas are already under parking restrictions. The wider programme was approved in December 2022 and involves Controlled Parking Zones expanding across the borough. A handy map within a council report shows the state of play.

A previous consultation covered existing areas and closed on 1 October 2023Next week’s meeting will lay out future steps and whether any changes are to undertaken in areas currently covered.
Consultation on future phases is also currently underway for areas around Brockley, Catford and Hither Green.
Ongoing expansion
The latest report covers the wider programme and states: “Areas of the borough not yet covered by Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) make up approximately 60% of the borough since the Sustinable Streets Programme was first implemented. The programme has been divided into phases for the proposed engagement and consultation of the Sustainable Streets programme”
As well as CPZs double yellow lines are being added at junctions to increase visibility for cars, cyclists and pedestrians at junctions. Much of that is to make clear what already exists under the Highway Code.
Other measures include EV charging points, cycle hangars, car club bays and planting new street trees.
Costs are levied with most vehicles between Band 1 and Band 5 of emissions based bandings. Annual permit charges for these bands is £85 – £158 for petrol and diesel compliant vehicles with an £80 surcharge for diesel non euro-6 compliant vehicles for all emissions bands.
Blue badge holders are able to apply for permits free of charge, as well as as a carers permit.

There is a lot of grey on that map where there were apparent consultations, but no change will occur. I have been living in the Lee Green area coming up to six years and have never seen or heard of the consultation.
My street is very close to Lee Station, but apparently it’s okay for commuters to park for free all day at the expense of health visitors, contractors, delivery drivers and us car owning residents.
There are already parking restrictions in Lee Green in the from the railway line northwards – and likewise Blackheath. The key to this map seems a bit misleading. What it means when it says “no changes introduced” to the grey areas is that long-standing restrictions have not been removed.
Woodyates Road and Holme Lacey Road look like they were part of Phase 2 – being consulted on last year (but the council failing to communicate effectively) and part of the current report going to Mayor and Cabinet in June.
@TMP Bacchus: it takes about five minute to walk to Lee Station from my road, but there is no residents’ parking and no consultation has taken place. It seems that my road is not posh enough. I bought a car last week and asked for it to be delivered today (Saturday) to ensure that I could see it from my window and not have to walk halfway up the street to the first available parking space, which would have been the case on a weekday.
Most streets near the station are all resident permits. But it is not checked during the day, so Many get away with parking in residential bays, all day with no ticket. Residents need to take a picture of car with no permit & report the registration number 🤔
Culverley Green area residents, Inchmery, Bargery, Penerley and Culverly Roads carried out their own house to house survey due to the undemocratic survey carried out by Lewisham council. The findings were that 80% of residents were opposed to implementing a Controlled Parking Zone. Lewisham council stated that they will listen to residents views and not go ahead where CPZ’s are not wanted. We can only hope that they listen so no further action is needed by reidents.
Pretty much the same for us residents in Brockley and surrounding area….I struggle to find a single person who actively supports the CPZ. It may sound like a viable solution on the surface but you quickly realise its a complete scam and does nothing to further aid parking. If the excuse is to stop commuters, then make them pay to park NOT the residents!! It’s a pure money making scam from our Council who show us complete contempt along with the Marstons of this world!!
True, it’s the wrong way around!
I live in the Brockley area and can’t wait for the CPZ to come into force. The area serves as a free park and ride for commuters.
Another money maker under the guise of sustainability!! We pay enough council tax, we should not have to pay for permits!!!
This is not a democratic vote. They are pushing it because they know many would pose it. We have seen the effects in having parking zone permits. Just another tax extortion at the cost of us living in areas that you cannot see how you already benefit, from taxes on homes, to general driving and more thus far. Worse when still having to listen year after year that your local council have no money to fix the pot hole roads, to improve poor public services and poor social housing living standards.
What is “consultation” when it appears to have been taken in Dec 2022 for phase one and the next phase agreed in 2023?
Where and when the council publish the full responses from the consultation(s) Also what is the percentage of responses in favour of the programme before plans are
I.plemented. the 5
What is meant by “consultation” when it appears0 the programme was approved in Dec 2022 and a further phase approved in 2023?
