New Woolwich leisure centre nears completion

A quick update today showing how Woolwich’s new leisure centre is looking as the building approaches completion.

Built upon the former Viscount house which was latterly homes to Wilko, the site will see new pools, gym and other facilities.

Due to open later this year it’ll replace the existing Waterfront which will shut its doors for good before demolition.

Awaiting signage

What fate awaits the Waterfront site? Greenwich Council are being very tight lipped.

The centre’s former car park is now home to six towers with the final two are also near complete – and a post earlier this week took a look at those.

In fact rather a lot around Woolwich is due to finish before the year is out including an upgrade to Beresford Square.

While work is ongoing there market traders have moved around to Green’s End and General Gordon Square covering the water feature.

Market traders should be moving on – well those that want to pay increased pitch costs the council are implementing – bringing General Gordon Square back to its former appearance.

Back to the new leisure centre and the council are looking at three potential names:

  • MOVE Woolwich
  • Woolwich Active
  • Woolwich Waves

The public can vote for their favoured choice here.

Housing plan

As for housing planned behind the leisure centre nothing has yet commenced despite business owners being evicted some time ago, such as those running The Bull Tavern pub.

When housing does finally begin a total of 482 homes are being built in partnership with private company Hill.

A total of 24 net new council homes out of 482 at public private partnership development in Woolwich

Out of 482 homes approved just 24 – five per cent of the total – will be net new council homes after those already on site are demolished and replaced. Even accounting for those replacements it’s just ten per cent of the overall total.
