Greenwich bar demolished as The Old Joinery makes way for tower
The site of a former bar beside Deptford Creek has been cleared in advance of a student tower.
The Old Joinery on Norman Road saw demolition plans submitted last year after a student block was previously approved.

Development will result in a 27-floor, 414 student block which will open up public space beside the creek.
Aside from a bar the site had been used for events in recent years. It’s where signs from the old Lord Hood pub demolished nearby on Creek Road ended up.
Numerous other developments lining the creek have been built in recent years, are underway or planned.

One such site now rising is Saxon Wharf a little to the south which will also open up a creek-side walk.
An existing path already exists between the future student site and Saxon Wharf but never opened to the public since completion. It’s supposed to when adjacent sites complete.
Further south plans have just gone in for the former Lewisham College site beside Deptford Bridge DLR station. More than 900 homes are included with the tallest block topping out at 31 storeys.

Miles too big for the area. The council losing their mind over a chip shop mural and a bar in an empty unit near the cutty sark but massive towers housing students we dont have GP facilities etc for is a ok.
I agree Fraser. They build towers with more floors to fit in hundreds of student rooms and new homes.. But do not improve the infrastructure with new GP Surgeries, hospitals, schools, transport, drains and sewage etc to cope with an ever increasing demand.
Seems if you have enough money you can build what you want.

More of our history being destroyed for developer greed. One of the reasons I settled in SE London was the architecture and the clear link to our past, now the whole area is slowly being turned into a Lewisham center-like soulless clone town.
And I’ll believe the creek path opening up line when I see it!
It is heartbreaking to see all our history and heritage being slowly destroyed bit by bit. So I totally understand where Janus Winter is coming from. We need to do more to protect historical buildings and history in the Borough of Greenwich. Aa do neighbouring Boroughs.
Exactly-Greenwich’s best point is its architecture and links with history which of course go hand in hand. We dont want to go down the nimby road, no one is saying we need to stand still and not build anything but building generic concrete and glass structures of this size just seems crass and thats not to mention the strain on public services. Extra students are to be welcomed but there needs to be a limit and some common sense applied.
Absolutely Feaser. The area is being over developed with hundreds of student rooms and new homes. But there is absolutely no improvements to public realm and infrastructure including GP Surgeries, Health Centes, public transport etc.
