Listed Woolwich church to see construction work after housing plan approved

The Grade II listed Church of St Michael and All Angels in Woolwich has seen construction details submitted after conversion to housing was approved in 2024.

The structure is located within the former Royal Military Academy beside Woolwich Common. The Ministry of Defence pulled out in 2003 with the site since converted into 334 flats by developer Durkan.

Housing development site didn’t complete until 2019 with only 23 homes out of 334 being for affordable rent despite it’s status as public land before being sold-off.

This latest application covers fabric upgrades to the roof, work on the floor and addition of secondary glazing.

Commissioned in 1902 and designed by architect Major E H Hemming RE the chapel later became the main Garrison church after the bombing of St George’s in 1944. Ruins there have been preserved with public access to a memorial garden on Sundays.
