Leegate centre sold by developer before redevelopment begins

The Leegate shopping centre has been sold by Galliard to developer London Square after years of inactivity.

It’s the latest twist in the shopping centre saga going back at least a decade when redevelopment plans were revealed by St Modwen. They were then revised in 2018 and covered here.

2018 plan for Lee Gate now dropped

Galliard purchased the site in 2021 but four years later are now selling it on to London Square. In the meantime many businesses have closed and jobs lost.

In 2023 planning permission was secured but no work has yet begun with Section 106 discussions carrying on into 2024.

Revised 2021 massing

Galliard’s approval included a 15-storey block and 562 homes. The plot’s new owners state they will start work later this year.

London Square is an Abu Dhabi-owned company that has purchased a number of plots across London including Woolwich Central either side of the Tesco superstore.

That’s set to include 712 homes and start in coming months.

They also purchased a 559-home development site in Crayford back in 2023.

  • I remember moving to Hither Green in 2014 and this was an exciting new development in the works. I left Hither Green for pastures West London in 2023 and there has not been an ounce of progress in an unloved corner of town. Looks like work is at least another 5 years away with the place just atrophying in the meantime…

    • I agree Ed Whitworth. Developers have dragged there heels over the Leegate Shopping Centre for decades
I really hope the new developers London Square go on to redevelop this site in the very near future. With work starting on the site during 2025..
Lee Green is a nice area and redeveloping this site can only enhance it for local residents who live close by to the site. Which is not very nice at the moment.

I live just along the road from the centre. It is rapidly becoming a flyblown blight where even litter that the street sweepers could deal with, is being ignored.

All the pass-throughs have now been boarded over. They also need to board up the area on the Eltham Road as this is rapidly coming a flytipping spot.
