No service on entire Elizabeth line between Abbey Wood and Paddington

The entire core section of the Elizabeth line is suspended this morning between Abbey Wood and Paddington.

A signal failure is blamed by Transport for London.

Southeastern trains will be much busier in South East London though unfortunately restoring morning services previously cut is not yet on place, with that happening in December.

Tickets are valid on local buses.

4PM UPDATE

The entire core is still down as of the evening peak.

Clearly this is a serious signalling issue the likes of which are rarely seen. For an entire line’s main section to go down for the entire day is extremely unusual.

Faults happen but are normally rectified within hours and don’t last an entire day. It’s likely an internal investigation will be undertaken with the issue popping up in TfL reports in future.

Southeastern earlier recommended people not to attempt to change at Abbey Wood.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Not only have they cut services on the Woolwich line but South Eastern sent out a four carriage train this morning in the peak.

  • The ITN London evening news correspondent said it was a botched software upgrade on the departure boards that resulted in the whole signaling system collapsing. If I understood him correctly, then this is incompetence on a number of levels.

    • The departure boards were not working when I was on the Elizabeth line last night about 11pm also. So perhaps they botched the fix if the news reporter is correct.

    • Firewall issue, started the day before.

  • Awful its not working again on Wednesday morning. Can’t they sort out the problem. Hate this line…

  • Sort of restarted late yesterday evening, down again today according to UK rail forums. Off to look at RTT.

This is really, really not good. Someone really, really missed a SPoF or software testing/rollout procedures are faulty.

If only the Lizzie Line was run by Cloudflare, we’d get the full post-incident analysis published in all the gory detail, along with exactly what they’d be doing to avoid a repetition.

  • Is it because of Storm Bert and Storm Cornall that has caused so much destruction and misery to everyone being affected by heavy rain and strong winds.
