Woolwich Catholic Club being demolished in advance of new development
Demolition work at Woolwich’s former Catholic Club is now well underway in advance of a student block being built on site.
Almost half the block on Beresford Street is now down.
The club has been closed for a decade at least if memory serves, with a number of revised plans over time.
A short video showing demolition work can be seen below.
The latest being a student housing block with almost 300 student rooms which was given the green light in 2022.

The closest new build viewed in this image actually wont be built now as part of Berkeley’s revised housing plans.
Berkeley Homes have removed that building as part of the a 663-home development they’ve named Ropeyards for which planning was submitted last month as covered here.
The above render also shows the old Woolwich market toilet block. Now gone of course as part of a major reworking of Beresford Square with a new café and pavilion due on site.
The site sits beside a Premier Inn hotel. The hotel’s car park will become part of a green stripe running to the Thames.
Student development is a huge growth area both across the capital and in Greenwich borough with numerous examples both approved and on the cards.
Next up for development in this immediate area will be revised plans for the MacBean Street site.
Many years after Woolwich Poly departed and the Victorian school building was demolished, it still looks like this.
That image was taken this week and if anything the site is becoming even more of an eyesore.
Completion is expected for the start of the 2026 academic year.

Lived in woolwich a long time. How’s the area supposed to sustain all this new ghastly housing with all the new people? And now students?
The Elizabeth line can hardly work as is. Has the council done anything to improve the infrastructure and other services to accommodate the influx?
Glad to see that Nasty looking building finally coming down, it was a total eyesore and needed to go. I’m not sure about more flats, seems we will be overloaded already with the spray st development. Woolwich was a dump when I moved here 20 yrs ago and I’m glad of some of the changes but there really is a big class divide and those who don’t have are being shafted by both developers and the council.
