Greenwich pub seeks to reopen after being forced to close

A meeting is being held today on a proposal to reopen an east Greenwich pub forced to close last year after a man was stabbed.

The Star & Garter was closed after a licensing hearing in August 2021. Police are objecting to the latest application.

The application now names the pub as The Star of Greenwich. The applicant is the manager of the pub when it was operational according to police.

An accompanying report lays out recent history:

“On 4th August 2021, the Royal Borough of Greenwich received a Summary Review application from the Metropolitan Police following a serious assault that had taken place at the venue on 1st August 2021.

As per the Regulations, the full hearing for this Review application took place on 26th August 2021 where the Royal Borough of Greenwich Licensing Review Committee decided to revoke the Premises Licence.”

Greenwich Council state it sits “immediately opposite a disused power station“. I thought it was still operational as a backup for TfL?

Anyway, the police “strongly object” to a new license.

They state the premises was uncooperative with police after a stabbing.

Results of the application will be known in coming days.
