Woolwich water leak continues weeks after Thames Water notified

A water leak in Woolwich town centre is still flowing weeks after Thames Water were alerted.

Woolwich New Road beside Tesco has seen water escaping from pipes for some time, with Thames Water claiming to be overstretched.

Another issue is Tesco is seeing flammable cladding removed, and Thames Water claim surveys are needed to see impact upon scaffolding before starting work.

A cacophony of failures right there. Inept regulation of housing meets poor performance from the privatised water company.

Greenwich Council state “We’re pressing Thames Water to fix the leak urgently and keep residents in the area informed. We’ll provide an emergency street works permit to ensure they’ve full access to the site.”.

This comes against the backdrop of a drought and possible hosepipe ban.

Thames Water’s results in 2021 shows they only met “26 of 49 performance commitments, resulting in net penalty of around £50 million; supply interruptions, sewer flooding, blockages, mains bursts and C-MeX below target”.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.
