Grass fire in Woolwich: 60 firefighters on scene

A large grass fire has broken out on Woolwich Common.

The London Fire Brigade state 60 firefighters are on scene. It follows shortly after a large grass fire in Bexleyheath.

Eight fire engines are on site, with around two acres alight.

Smoke has been seen near the Ark school.

Parts of the country are currently in the grip of very low rainfall and parched ground, with record temperatures expected today or tomorrow of around 40c.

  • Dreadful. It looks as if the epicentre is the place where the thieves and vandals set up fires to burn the casing of the stolen copper wire which was left by BT in a skip right next to the Common.
