New Greenwich town centre Aldi to be without any checkouts
Aldi’s forthcoming new branch in Greenwich town centre is to be their first without any checkouts.
Shoppers will use smartphones to pay instead of using any checkouts along the lines of Amazon’s recent stores.
No checkouts will be used – self-serve or otherwise – with technology tracking items when leaving.
The shop is located in a former Poundstretcher unit and set to open in October.
The branch will see high levels of tourist use given its location and Aldi’s brand recognition being popular worldwide. There’s a presence in much of Europe alongside Australia and the States.
Staff explaining to tourists there are no checkouts may be interesting.
As a private renter with a young family, the cost of living is extremely high.
Support me and the site via Paypal here which allows me to focus time on researching and writing posts alongside taking photographs to document changes. Adverts are far from enough to cover living costs.

I also have a Facebook page for the site here
Thank you
Oh dear, what happens to us dinosaurs that don’t have smartphones?
Sainsbury’s is across the car park đ
It’s gonna close within a few months after they realise how much theft will have taken place…
Dinosaurs love Aldi!
@Pat, what about those of us too mean to use mobile data? đ
@Donald Deagan, I think Aldi will have thought about the tea leaves.
How ridiculous no checkouts at a time we need more retail jobs for local people.
I am sure the new Aldi Store in Greenwich will see a fair amount of people trying to shop lift. It already happens at other stores with self service checkouts.
@Pat I agree with you many people still do not have i phones which can be really expensive to purchase or have higher monthly tariffs.
@anoymous201481 Likewise I do not use my mobile data either.
I think the Sainsburys Local could be the winner here.
They donât care, I was so looking forward to going there but thatâs not going to happen now.
