Ikea to open store in Bromley town centre

Ikea have announced the opening of a new store in Bromley town centre at a unit vacated by Mothercare.

Unlike the new Greenwich store, this is Ikea’s new selling concept first opened at Tottenham Court Road.

People can design and choose furniture which is then delivered to them at home.

The far smaller store format means no restaurant or small homeware items (or at least vastly reduced in range).

Given the big difference in offerings, is it likely to extract some shoppers from the Greenwich store, which is due to open early in 2019?

The new concept of smaller town centre stores was announced in July this year and covered here.

At the time Ikea manager Javier Quiñones said:

“Urbanisation and inner-city living are trends that continue to dominate the market. By launching this new approach and investing in our online offer and services, we are working to ensure Ikea remains affordable, convenient and sustainable, both now and in the future.”

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • There is one of these in Westfield – can’t remember if it’s Shepherd’s Bush or Stratford – but the concept won’t draw me away from the Greenwich store to which I will be able to drive, if necessary. I want the full IKEA experience and not a taster.

  • I live near Bromley and feel the one intended to go in the old mother care will be tiny with selected items, probably the items larger as kitchens, sofas and desks etc and no house ware items which I love to have a browse around for, and the use of the restaurant course. I’m loving an ikea is coming to Bromley but disappointed in the small location, I’ll probably end up travelling to Croydon still
