Lesnes Abbey retains Green Flag status

Parkland at Lesnes Abbey ruins has retained its Green Flag status again in recognition of work undertaken on the grounds.

The site is an absolute gem but one that I always feel is underappreciated by people across south east London let alone across the capital.

It’s a short walk from Abbey Wood station with its ample rail service from the Elizabeth line, Southeastern Metro and Thameslink. The ruins of Lesnes Abbey sit amongst parkland, gardens, a cafe and of course the woods next door.

Regular events are held in the area including outside theatre, markets and festivals. The Friends of Lesnes Abbey play a key role in the park’s upkeep.

The area underwent a multi-million pound refurbishment in recent years and is well worth a visit.

  • It’s the Mulberry Tree next to the abbey and the history behind it that is overlooked I believe by many that I find fascinating.
Mulberry trees from the same period in history can be found all over the country including Charlton House.
