Greenwich to see Blank Street Coffee open in town centre

Plans are in to open a branch of Blank Street Coffee on Nelson Street in Greenwich.

The chain have a sizable number of outlets across the country after starting out in the US, and are now seeking to open in the former Oliver Bonas shop.

Proposed frontage as seen in planning application

Known for their matcha drinks, growth has been rapid with the first UK coffee shop opening in 2022. In April this year it was reported the company are seeking to raise $100 million in fresh funding.

The Greenwich branch at 3-4 Nelson Road will see a similar frontage to other sites in the chain according to submitted planning documents.

  • Great , just what we need in Greenwich town centre – another coffee shop.

    • Haha, I presume your comment Kathy, was satirical, but you can never tell! If it were, I totally agree. Oliver Bonas was at least interesting, and how can it be that permission is given to change use to, not just another store, but another coffee shop, and a double-fronted one! Do the freeholders have no thoughts for local residents needing shops too? Greenwich is not solely for day trippers!!
And what about the little local independent ‘UK-owned’ coffee shops, now facing competition from what is yet another US-owned, and probably ‘private-equity’ financed store, and yet another bland high street offering, to lead Greenwich along the path of homogenised high streets, away from the quirkiness it was once known for. It’s all about landlord income once again, is it not?

      • Yes I was making a satirical comment. It is my understanding that coffee shops fall under Use Class E ( Commercial , Business and Services) .Because a cafe is in the same use class as shops and offices a shop premises can become a cafe without a planning change of use – hence Blank St can open up on Nelson Road. Interesting to see this change of tenant, given Greenwich Hospital’s recently announced decision to seek a buyer for its premises on Nelson Road , Greenwich Church St , College Approach and King William Walk. ( GH are not seeking a buyer for the Covered Market).
This sale does not seem to have got much publicity.
