Proposed Woolwich pub site finally finds potential occupant
A building on Powis Street in Woolwich which had a number of applications from the Antic group over the past ten years for a pub looks to have possibly found a new occupant.
And it’s not Antic.
The building beside the art deco former co-op department store at the eastern end of Woolwich town centre has seen a license application from “Classic Restaurant & Lounge”.
They initially applied for a licence last month before a revised plan went in which is for a restaurant only.

This follows an application in August 2025 to convert the site into a shop.
It remains to be seen whether this venture has more luck than the numerous plans that came and went over the past decade.
If you want to support this site, please find out how just below. Many thanks to all who do.

It will be brilliant to see this building brought back in to use. I hope the latest planning application gets the go ahead and we see tbe building refurbished and used.
This end of Powis street needs upgrading along with neighbouring Hare Street to continue to upgrading the town centre.
I looked up who is running it and assuming the name matches to another Woolwich business it’s somewhere that is “black only” according to them.
How is that legal? And as someone who lived in Woolwich on the 80s how depressing to see. Back then there were many problems but we had lots of mixed race nights and never had signs saying white only or black only. Are we going backwards? Feels like Woolwich is heading segregated 1960s America seeing social media from some
I agree, this is not good at all. I noticed the planning application last week and was so disappointed to see who the applicant was.
This is not the high quality, friendly, and inclusive place that Woolwich needs.
Yeah they state their events are “all black” and if not don’t expect to be welcome.
I’d rather it be Nepalese or Desi as those are generally more welcoming to others. This sounds exclusionist.
If the above comments are true and the application is rubber stamped then people on the council will need to take a long hard look at themselves. I would hope that RBG
wouldn’t entertain such an application.
I have watched news and planning applications for this site for many years now and want it to be a thriving and inclusive venture that keeps the integrity of the buildings façade but not in the guise of what is being suggested.
