Shop plan submitted for former Greenwich bank
An application has been made to open a branch of Oliver Bonas in a former Greenwich bank.
Nat West closed the bank back in February 2024 with the site remaining vacant for 17 months.

According to the application the building’s ground floor frontage will be painted green.
Oliver Bonas are a nationwide chain selling clothing and homeware.

I am always pleased to see empty buildings being brought back in to use. The shop is in a prime location and should do well with a lot of footfall from local residents, students, tourist and other visitors to Greenwich Town Centre.
I wish the new owners of the store good luck and great success for the future. It is not easy opening a new branch or business in these difficult times.
58 quid + for toot I don’t see many students or locals using this store, the cheapest pair of socks is 8.50. the community needs something worthwhile and beneficial for the community not a high end clothing and home wear store for drumming up more businesses from rude tourists clogging up our streets!
Great to see a new business opening in the area, but looking at that first photo it’s unbelievable how tiny the pavements are here and how much space is given over to traffic. The solution is going to take a lot of progressive thinking and big ideas – I doubt RBG have the ability to do that.
You quite clearly don’t live in Greenwich as this isn’t a new store, Oliver Bon as have a store already just round the corner and the pavement outside of the current building is sufficient width.
Sadly all they are doing is swapping one building for another and leaving the current shop they are in most likely which will become vacant
Thank you for the patronising comment, I’m fully aware of the other store and I happen to think this is an improvement as this is a significant store and part of the gateway to Greenwich Town centre.
I won’t even bother discussing the pavement issue – you’re clearly a dinosaur local who enjoys the rat run. Lucky for you it’ll probably stay the same with the useless council. Have a great day!
Hi Adam, unfortunately your sarcasm fell on deaf ears 😦
however your response to D B came across as unnecessarily rude. May I suggest a different approach? It might make your argument more convincing.
I do agree though, a wider pavement on that road would be a nice improvement, especially for those of us with dinosaur feet.
Have a lovely day.
The problem with that pavement is the rubbish that’s always left there, more than anything. The road width is necessary to allow the bus lane as well as cyclists to not get bashed over by cars doing the sharp turn out of Church St
I live iin the Borough of Greenwich but admit i forgot about the other stote already in Gteenwich.
That said I still wish the owners good luck and great success in their new location.
I hope their old building does not remain empty for too long.
Greenwich Town Centre could do with wider pavements. But this does not seem important to the council. Where a lot of new developments have been built pavement space has been reduced to allow cycle lanes etc on existing roads as mentioned previously by John in previous post.
Please to see this big unit taken but was hoping to see something a bit more exciting than Oliver Bonas
I just glad to see a empty building being brought back in to use.
There were plans to partly pedestrianise a part of Gteenwich Town Centre. Greenwich Council run expensive public consultations on the plan to pedestrianise part of Greenwich Town Centre but than nothing came of the scheme. Which is a shame as I believe it would have helped improve Greenwich and would have made it safer for pedestrians.
I use to work in Greenwich town centre for over 20 years.
In my opinion it’s lost it’s unique feel with more and more chains moving in and more and more coffee shops, restaurants etc.
It’s too tourist dependent.
I recall the day of Rectangle, The Obervatory, Bullfrogs, Flyjack, Joy etc – something other than food or drink based!
Unfortunately Greenwich Hospital have been the main reason for this – raising rents too much too quickly and forcing some companies out….
The mix of the type of shops is very poor
I just can’t see Oliver Bonus (or any other non food/drink company) lasting a very long time in Greenwich (unless the rent is very low), as the footfall is far toodependent on tourist money, so they will struggle in off-peak seasons….
Blackheath Village at least has a decent mix of shops – a few clothing shops, kitchen/bathroom, decorating shops, Selectric, cosmetics, along with restaurants, bakers, coffee shops etc
