Asda to finally open Greenwich and Deptford stores
Asda are to finally open a long proposed shop in Greenwich after previously putting opening on hold.
The Asda express on Greenwich South Street saw signage applied before the company pulled the plug on a roll out of shops nationally.
It’s within a new build block on the former site of a Majestic wine shop.
Now they’ve announced that programme of store openings including in Greenwich will resume.

In total 20 shops will open from October with another in Deptford.
That too is within a new build development named Deptford Landings. Construction work on site is ongoing (slowly) and when complete will see more than 1,100 homes.

Excellent news for local residents. These smaller stores are ideal for your daily essentials and ffor grabbing something quick on your way home from work.
Did anything ever happen to the proposal to open an Asda in Blackheath?
@WM: the plan was either rebuffed or withdrawn – can’t remember which. It was going to be in the old Lloyds Bank building that was more recently a restaurant. Interestingly, as the bus I was on passed by, I noticed that a new business – another bakery? – was on the verge of opening.
Blackheath desperate for some more practical shops. Great if you want a croissant and a coffee, not so great if you want a pint of milk and a loaf
@ Vern a. The Asda Local at planned at the old bank in Blackheath Village would have been ideal for local residents to get their daily essentials like bread milk etc. As you rightly says stores like these are lacking in some areas including Blackheath.
@Vern a and @Graham: there is a big Sainsbury’s down at Lee Green and a M&S in Old Dover Road. However, Shepherds (right nextdoor to Age Exchange) sells food and doubtless milk. I don’t think their price is going to be a hardship for most of the people who live in the Blackheath Village vicinity.
