Charlton retail park set to see a new gym

Plans have gone in to work on a building at Stone Lake retail park in Charlton for another gym.

A mezzanine floor would be built within the former Carpetright unit.

This will be the third private gyms in Charlton in close proximity with Anytime Fitness and Puregym. The name of the gym hasn’t yet been disclosed but I’ll keep an eye out and update when known.

Greenwich Council formerly had a gym nearby too operated by GLL under the “Better” brand which if memory serves was in the Valley? I really should remember given I would visit on occasion when I had a borough-wide membership.

To be honest I wasn’t even aware it had closed!

Mind you it was so far back the old Plumstead gym wasn’t in what is now the Plumstead Centre.

Stone Lake retail park opened in Charlton back in 1998 around the time the road between Woolwich and Greenwich saw major works in advance of the Millennium Dome opening.

They built a huge car park which was never full. Much has been blocked for years. It’d be an ideal spot for new housing.

The stretch of carriageway outside is set to see major changes in the near future for a cycle lane – but that’s an issue for another post.

  • They’re digging up the never used lower car park beyond Currys.

I visited the Currys there some weeks before, and they’re still selling Nero Burning ROM on DVD, complete in retail packaging. It made sense for it to be sold by PC World back in the 00’s, but to see it still peddled for £40 really does add to the feeling that the area is truly stuck in time.

  • Bit is a shame the old carpet right store could not have been retired for retail use. That said i would rather see gym in there rather than the unit standing empty for years. What will be the opening. hours for the new gym. I understand gyms being open fron early until late so people can go to the gym around the working hours and for shift workers. However, I do not believe gyms necessarily need to be open. 24 hours..
