TfL reveal which DLR routes will see cuts next month

Transport for London have revealed which services will be cut next month due to new train delays on the DLR.

With older stock running longer than anticipated, route changes are coming from Monday 21 July as older stock begins to be withdrawn over the summer.

Changes include no peak hour services between Lewisham and Stratford. A change at Canary Wharf will be required.

Services between Canary Wharf and Stratford will run every 5 minutes in the peak and every 6.5 minutes during off peak times. Bank to Lewisham services will continue to run as normal.

In addition Beckton to Canning Town shuttles and Beckton to Stratford International services will also cease. Tower Gateway to Beckton services will continue to run as normal.

Timings are set due to the start of the summer holiday.

Delays

The first of a fleet of 54 new trains was supposed to commence running before April 2024 but the target came and went. The new date according to TfL remains before the end of 2025.

When in service new stock will see air con (how that’s missed right now), walk-through carriages and an overall higher capacity. When all 54 are in service, that also results in a net gain with overall trains and the promise of higher frequencies.

According to Transport for London “extensive testing is continuing, which included successful mixed operation trails with both new and existing fleet in May, with excellent progress being made.”

Introduction has been hit by a number of problems. Additional sidings at Beckton were delayed as contractor Buckingham collapsed.

During testing one train overshot a stop point and signal issues became apparent between new stock and the existing system.

Issues have impacted TfL finances as completed trains have required storage in Spain with additional payments given a lack of storage space in London, while constant weekend closures across the network have hit revenue.

‘Beckton to Canning Town and Stratford International services will also cease.’ What, that’s the entire line?

    • The other trains from Beckton to Tower Gateway will still run but not those that operate like a shuttle to Canning Town or continue to Stratford.

      • I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Beckton to Stratford line operating though? almost always its just Woolwich Arsenal or Lewisham services (now just Canary Wharf I guess) from Stratford International

  • I have a feeling that the new DLR B23 Stocks might come into service before or after Christmas this year. And the Piccadilly Line 2024 Stocks to enter service from next year as it’s been delayed.

  • I think that London needs a new Mayor of London who can help with improving London’s transport and to order new rolling stocks. Including new tube trains for the Bakerloo Line and extra trains for London Overground to add more capacity on the Mildmay Line, Lioness Line, Weaver Line (to run 8-Car to Chingford, Cheshunt and Enfield Town) and the Suffragette Line. And to make London a much safer capital city for not just Londoners but tourists who come to London on holiday.

@Anonymous: how will any new mayor pay for all that?
