Greenwich foot tunnel website finally updated after Cutty Sark DLR closure
Earlier this week this site covered a failure to update the website showing the status of lifts within the Greenwich foot tunnel after Cutty Sark DLR station closed.
Since the closure TfL have directed some to use the nearby Island Gardens accessible via the foot tunnel – though it wasn’t usable for some with a broken lift despite what the foot tunnel website stated.

Well it was finally updated yesterday after a two week gap which confirmed the south lift had been out of action wince 28th May.
Meaning the timeline was that the lift broke down on 28th May, DLR services stopped calling (for up to a year for escalator replacement) from 30th May but no information given on the foot tunnel’s dedicated status website for eight days after the closure.
Improvement
Hopefully a more frequent update is now offered and no more two week gaps. The lifts are notoriously unreliable which is known to locals but many tourists may not be aware – and Greenwich of course is an extremely popular tourist attraction.
The updated page shows the north lift has only worked 61 per cent of the time over the past month with the south lift at 85 per cent reliability.
The alternative to Island Gardens is Greenwich station itself which is the safest bet if heading to Greenwich town centre.
A tip to reach the town centre is head to the north and walk down Straitsmouth avoiding some of the crowds. It’ll take you past St Alfege Church and its gardens.

Cutty Sark DLR station is to close for just a year because of upgrade works and the Greenwich Foot Tunnel would provide an alternative way to get to Cutty Sark from the north side.
When coming from Stratford, Bank, Tower Gateway and Canary Wharf on the DLR. Or to travel to Greenwich station on the DLR and get off there and walk to Cutty Sark which isn’t that far at all.
Fury that I feel with these out of service lifts at the foot tunnel.
We were OK with the old Victorian lifts plus attendant.
After years of gross incompetence during the fitting of these new lifts Now the new lifts don’t work….
The DLR escalators are a national scandal…Will they ever work again!!
Yet TFL pay their execs millions….
