Deptford High Street pedestrianisation: Lewisham release further details

Lewisham Council have released further details of a proposed pedestrianisation along Deptford High Street.

Consultation was undertaken back in June 2023 and further public feedback is now sought. Who says things in this country move at a snail’s pace with endless consultation?

Overview of changes

Ideas now include introducing a pedestrianised area at Reginald Road and closing Hales Street & Frankham Street to most vehicles. Cycle parking would be installed around New Cross Road.

Lighting beneath the railway bridge is also mentioned.

In terms of pedestrianisation three options are on the table:

  • Seven days a week, from 10am until 5pm
  • Seven days a week, from 10am until 6pm
  • Seven days a week, from 11am until 7pm

Past project

It’s not that long ago since a prior public realm project along the High Street but here’s another for your delectation.

It’s the usual stuff again now with new trees, signs and raised planters. As ever the usual question is will they be maintained?

In terms of routine cleaning the authority state they are “committed to daily sweeping and mobile sweeping on Sundays and or Bank Holidays”.

Raised planters bring to mind 1980s Woolwich pedestrianisation

Some of the design harks back to 1980s pedestrianisation schemes with raised planters such as Woolwich which became barriers to pedestrian footfall in busy areas and were later removed.

Funding is from both Transport for London and Section 106 revenue from new development in the borough.

  • Deptford used to have a brilliant market selling a good range of products at reasonable prices.
I think improvements to the High Street would be welcomed by both local residents and visitors to Deptford. Deptford is an upcoming area when plenty of new homes having been built or under construction. .
