London Overground station upgrade at Surrey Quays progresses

Work to expand Surrey Quays station to benefit London Overground passengers is progressing with the installation of a new birdge.

In a press release today Transport for London state that a footbridge was lifted into position during a weekend closure of the Windrush line: “When completed, this new footbridge with stairs leading to all platforms will provide relief to the existing narrow staircases, which can often suffer from congestion at peak times.”

A new station structure and entrance is being constructed across the Lower Road in Rotherhithe as seen below.

TfL expects 60 per cent of passengers to use the new entrance when thge area is developed. A ticket hall will also be located within the new structure.

Alongside the new station passengers can expect an increase in train frequency upon the completion of line upgrade works.

Shopping centre redevelopment

Work is in aid of a major development of Surrey Quays shopping centre with work spanning a vast area including sites beside Canada Water station.

Surrey Quays station will see a new entrance located beside the current shopping centre car park close to Tesco. The supermarket will move to a new site as part of a mixed-use block located on a now-closed Odeon cinema.

It’s also one of the cloest stations for residents of Deptford Landings which is set to see 1,100+ home supon completion.

Work continues on subsequent phases after one phase completed late last year.

Scott Haxton, Director of Capital Delivery – Infrastructure, said: “Major improvements at Surrey Quays station remain on track to be delivered in summer 2026, transforming the journeys for thousands of customers who use the station every day. New lifts will make it more accessible for everyone, and the new entrance will provide better connections with the local area. These station improvements will support the new homes and jobs being created in Canada Water area.”

Miles Price, Planning Director at British Land, said: “The new entrance at Surrey Quays station is one of a number of significant upgrades to local transport infrastructure that British Land is facilitating to support delivery of the Canada Water Masterplan.

“We’re delighted that our development has enabled TfL’s work, with upfront funding supporting its delivery early in our 10-year masterplan. The new entrance, which features an impressive new ticket hall and provides step-free access at the station for the first time, will improve the journey experience for existing local residents and visitors to Canada Water alike.”

Redevelopment of the area could see up to 4,000 homes and is funded in a joint venture between British Land and AustralianSuper, Australia’s biggest profit-to-member pension fund.

  • Nice to see station upgrade at Surrey Quays station and to have lifts and new footbridge. Why not build a new railway station on the London Overground Windrush Line at Surrey Canal Road in Bermondsey. And to be so close to Millwall FC The Den stadium.
