Plumstead fire station sees historic lantern return

Work to renovate and extend Plumstead fire station has taken a step further towards completion with the addition of a prominent corner lantern as once existed.

The project has seen an extension facing Plumstead High Street with the main exit for appliances set to move around from Lakedale Road.

The London Fire Brigade state that “the iconic fire lantern was part of the original 1906 design and believed to have been lost during a renovation in the mid-20th century”.

They worked with the Heritage of London Trust on ensuring a faithful design which matched the original.

At one stage the LFB were looking to leave the listed building before changing plans and adopting extension and renovation.

The 2015 decision to move was cancelled in 2020 before an application was submitted in 2021.

And a good job they’ve done too not only with the new addition but restoring original features next door.

Plumstead High Street is looking better these days more widely with a lot of street clutter removed and the addition of greenery here and there.

Some shopfront work was undertaken too in recent years.

Currently though Lakedale Road is closed so getting to it isn’t the easiest – but this latest addition to a fantastic local building is another small step towards improving the town.

Running a site alone takes time and a fair bit of money. Adverts are far from enough to cover it and my living costs as a private renter.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

    • Excellent great to see the lantern being put back in to place. With the help of Heritage London. It is so Important we keep our heritage sites and features like the lantern.
Over the years we have lost so much of our heritage over the years where buildings etc
have been lost through redevelopment or fell in to decline over the years
