Blackwall tunnel weekend closure to commence for new Greenwich bridge

Closure of the Blackwall tunnel southbound is set to begin tomorrow (Friday 31st March) at 10pm and run until 5am on Monday morning.

A new footbridge is set to be installed to replace the existing structure.

I popped over to take a look with the base of the bridge installed ready for the span to be lifted into place.

While the new bridge has been lauded by some at TfL, the approaches on either side remain dismal for pedestrians.

They’ll be a follow-up post on the wider area soon.

Work so far

The new bridge is to be installed as additional traffic lanes will be constructed due to the Silvertown tunnel just north of the area.

There will be four lanes in each direction beneath the new structure.

Replacement bridge above wider road

While the Blackwall tunnel is closed drivers will be diverted to either the Rotherhithe tunnel or Woolwich ferry.

Two boats will be in operation this weekend, with long running strike action now called off after a new pay offer was accepted.

Another closure will be needed at a future date to remove the existing bridge. TfL have given a tentative summer 2023 date.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.
