Blackwall tunnel closed after flood

A band of extremely heavy rain passing through London has caused a flood at the Blackwall tunnel.

It’s closed northbound with extensive tailbacks around Charlton including retail parks, the Peninsula and other areas of Greenwich.

Traffic on the Peninsula is gridlocked hampering bus services from North Greenwich bus station. The 108 is also curtailed.

A Hot Wheels event at the o2 also saw many cars entering the area today. The second of two shows is set to begin at 6:30pm.

Flooding also closed the tunnel in 2021. Further rain is expected in coming hours.

UPDATE: The tunnel has reopened northbound, though southbound is now seeing heavy traffic.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.
