Crackdown on delivery bikes in Woolwich

An operation targeting illegal delivery bikes has taken place in Woolwich town centre.

According to the local authority, Greenwich Council, the Met Police and Immigration Enforcement undertook action which saw four arrests and “11 illegal e-bikes, mopeds and scooters were seized, while multiple Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) were handed out.”

Councillor Calum O’Byrne Mulligan, Cabinet Member for Transport, Climate Change, Waste and Streets, said: “We’re cracking down on illegal electric bikes, motorbikes, scooters and mopeds across Greenwich.

“We’re firm believers that two-wheeled travel is a sustainable, safe and healthy way to get around our borough – but only when it’s done responsibly.

“Illegal e-bikes, scooters and mopeds present a clear danger to anyone on the roads of our borough, as well as the people riding them.

“By providing advice and guidance on legal e-bike usage, and by confiscating non-compliant vehicles, we’re making our streets safer for everyone.”

Of the four arrested, “three riders were arrested for illegal working, and police arrested another in possession of offensive weapons and class B drugs.”

The latest operation followed a similar measure undertaken earlier this year.

Powis Street

A recent council report and subsequent meeting discussed the issue of delivery bikes in Woolwich town centre with a focus around Powis Street where a number of fast food restaurants are located.

The report was covered on this site earlier this month, with the meeting due some coverage soon. It covered various issues such as shop vacancy rates, visitors, safety and how improvements can be achieved.

Better off if they acted against Lime bikes (and Forest and Voi). At least the delivery guys are doing their jobs, and serve a purpose.

  • Not quite sure how “illegal” bikes are such a “clear danger” (do they explode or something?), and I can’t imagine “non-compliant vehicles” are of any concern to those ordering the deliveries.

    • The law specifies the maximum power and speed of electric bicycles, and that notwithstanding the electric assistance they must only move when the rider pedals. This is for what I would have thought is obviously safety reasons.
