Electric buses set for more SE London routes including the 96
New bus contracts have been awarded which will see electric buses on south east London routes.
A total of four routes will see new double-deckers including the 96, 229, 428 and 492.

Three of the four head out of London into Kent, terminating at Bluewater.
Route 229 is currently operated by Arriva who retain control. That requires 18 buses to operate.

The 96 is by far the busiest with 24 vehicles. Operation is moving from Plumstead’s Stagecoach garage to Arriva in Dartford.
The route runs from Woolwich through Plumstead then Welling and Bexleyheath before leaving London and serving Dartford and Bluewater.
Contract start dates for all the 96, 229, 428 and 492 starts on 24 January 2026.
More than 20 per cent of London’s buses are now electric, comprising more than 2,000 vehicles.

There is a quiet, out of the way, area in kent that has several 8 year old fully electric double decker london buses slowly rotting away. Why?
Where is that?
The 89 and 486 buses could do with new buses that don’t have to struggle up Shooters Hill!
