Lewisham station area upgrade completed by Network Rail over Easter

Network Rail have completed part of a signalling upgrade in the Lewisham area intended to reduce delays.

The full project is due for completion in late 2026 and Network Rail have helpfully released a video showing work recently undertaken (the Lewisham part begins at 40 seconds)

It includes some shots of the area as work undertaken, as does another video produced by Network Rail.

This one is featured on the project’s dedicated website.

The £90 million project follows £55 million spent in the area back in 2019. Further work saw a ten-day closure undertaken in 2022.

Lewisham is one of the busiest parts of the Southeastern network with two lines merging just west of the station.

Another major project locally – though not part of this scheme – is another 10-week closure of the Blackheath tunnel linking Lewisham and Charlton.

That’s set to begin in a month’s time.

It was also recently stated in a Lewisham Council Transport meeting that Network Rail and Lewisham Council are in talks about allocating income from the many new developments in the area for new station entrances and exits.

Lewisham formerly had another entrance/exit leading to Platform 4 which closed in the 2010s. Since then thousands of homes have either been built or are planned on that side of the station.

A separate tower built to the south within the “Vita” tower contains passive provision for a new entrance – though was never fitted out.
