Greenwich riverside bar/restaurant proposed – but some oppose

Plans for a bar and restaurant in Greenwich will be heard at a licensing meeting next week.

A unit named Rupert & Teddy seek to sell alcohol on site but have seen Housing Association L&Q oppose.

Initially plans were for “a shop (delicatessen) and restaurant/bar from the premises.”

The owners sought to sell bottles to take away until closing but according to an email from a local councillor the police aren’t keen:

“I should also have added that our Local Neighbourhood Policing Team have indicated that they have concerns about an off premises licence, for the reasons outlined in my initial email regarding an off premises alcohol licence due to the historic issues associated with the nearby basketball court and adjacent part of the Thames Path.”

I can’t see those drinking on basketball courts buying bottles at a fiver a go when, for example, Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose nearby will sell four cans for the same price but police often seem happy to limit any sort of nightlife in the major world city that is London.

Another local councillor states: “This is a well known site for antisocial behaviour as well as more serious criminal activity linked to drug dealing in particular. There is regularly anti-social public drinking on this part of the Thames Path as well.”

Sigh. We can’t have nice things. The ongoing attempts to throttle London’s nightlife continue.

The applicant has since agreed to limit alcohol sales from 10:00 hours until 19:00 hours for both on and off-site sale.

  • Oh my God there has to be some sort of sense going into these decisions as a deli place that wants to open a bit late for food and drink is hardly a spoons or a two quid a shot place is it?!

No wonder London’s nightlike is dying a death. Potential jobs will gone and viability lost. Pitiful all round. Who the hell lives above a unit beside the Thames and complains FFS. Do these muppets know how lucky they already are to live in such an area as many would give their right arms to live there and would actually embrance a new place.

  • It’s becoming impossible to run a business in this city. I think the deli will be a good addition to the waterfront. That site has been vacant for too long. I wonder what’s happening with the other waterfront units.

  • I would fully support a delicantsen opening on this site. I think it would be good for Greenwich and local people living in and visiting the area.
If people want to buy bottles to drink on the street they would go to supermarkets and off licences just like they do now.
If the premises does become a pub and restaurant then I understand that late licences after 11pm can not be issued as have to be respectful to local.resiidents many of whom have to get up for work or may have small children that need to sleep.

  • Just laughable – do these people get past the very first thought that occurs to them?

Presumably that first thought was that if alcohol is available in any form, people will get drunk and act up. Does the second thought that people who hang around dealing drugs don’t go to ‘ Rupert & Teddy, the Artisanal Deli’ to stock up, and in its absence can be at Wetherspoons, M+S, Waitrose or Tesco within a 90 second walk not occur to them? Does it in fact occur to them but they decide to ignore it?

Edit – looks like they were granted a license – but till 7pm?? In an absolutely prime location along the river in a global city?? Still laughable, how can we ever compete?

    • Exactly-Waitrose and Tesco are literally and extra minutes walk away. Insane objection.
