Superloop between Bromley and Croydon to finally see double-deckers as tree works complete
Work to prune trees which will see Superloop route SL5 to use double-decker buses in complete according to TfL.
SL5 runs between Bromley and Croydon though utilised small single-deckers upon introduction – which has led to some very busy buses.
Reasoning given by Transport for London was given as overhanging trees along South Eden Park Road.
In a section of TfL’s site on future Superloop plans they now state:
“The necessary tree pruning work on South Eden Park Road, that would allow double decking the service has now between completed. We are planning further route test but expect double deck buses to enter service this year.”
A contract has been awarded for new electric double-decker buses to begin on the route with a contract start date of 12 April 2025. The start date does not mean double-deckers will be in place from day one let alone new buses, which could take some months.

It’s not the only south east London route set to see electric double deckers with SL2 between Thamesmead and Bromley also due to receive similar, with New Routemasters heading elsewhere.
Superloop route SL7 between Croydon and Heathrow will too see electric double-deckers this coming year.
Trees will always grow back and grow taller unless you remove the whole part. That would be disastrous as trees are vital to keep the air cleaner and not consume poisonous fumes from vehicles passing by.
We still need trees as we rely on them and they give out clean oxygen. And London needs trees to keep its suburban areas cleaner and healthy. As many petrol and diesel vehicles are to be phased out and replaced by battery powered and hydrogen fuel vehicles before 2050.
