Work underway on new Sainsbury’s supermarket near the o2 in Greenwich

Work has commenced to expand and convert the ground floor of a Greenwich block into a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

An application was made covering the new store this year at 6 Mitre Passage. Last year a proposal to construct an extension was approved.

The proposed location is near the cable car and not far from the o2 beside a Tesco Express which often becomes absolutely rammed. There’s clearly demand for food stores here.

Existing Tesco next door. Sainsbury’s coming to the right

Nearby housing developments will add to footfall. There’s a few about nearby totalling many hundreds of homes.

With the total number of homes at knight Dragon’s Greenwich Peninsula masterplan continually revised up and now more than 17,000, what’s currently being built is but a fraction of eventual totals.

And still more sites see plans outside of that masterplan, with the latest last week being a number of blocks including 352 flats and 340 student rooms from Fairview Homes as covered here.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Opening a Sainsburys here is good news and will be vety much welcomed by local residents and visitors to thre area. The Tesco Store is always exceptionally busy. Which shows the demand for new food stores in the area as new homes in the area are completed.
