Cycle Highway 4 extension to London Bridge station under consultation

Plans to extend Cycle Highway 4 westwards along Tooley Street have been revealed by TfL. They state “we are planning to begin construction of these temporary changes in early March 2021.”

Cycle Highway 4 is planned to see permanent work from Greenwich to Tower Bridge. Work is now ongoing on a temporary extension to Charlton to the east with work to Woolwich on ice.

Much of the permanent work on CS4 is still to be undertaken in Deptford and Rotherhithe.

Bridge to London Bridge station over Tooley Street

Work would see wands installed along Tooley Street and Duke Street including outside London Bridge station for a temporary westward extension.

Last November I took a look at plans for some major changes in the area with a pedestrian footbridge set to be demolished and a new office block built.

New tower

Gone is post-war Colechurch House and the walkway from station to bridge.

To be demolished

It was disappointing to see the plan appear to reduce street space in a very busy area. How a cycle lane works with those changes in the long term remains to be seen. Take a look a pavement width above and then below:

Note there is no cycle lane on renders of Duke Street. A temporary lane could vanish when a new build rises.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Is it me or are pavements getting smaller as new developments are built throughout London.. despite the Government and Local Authorities encouraging more people to walk.

I know this matter as already been raised by Murky with regard to the development due to be constructed by the Woolwich Covered Market as part of the Spray Street redevelopment which will see pavement space significantly reduced on Plumstead Road by busy bus stops.
