Bexley update list of ongoing street projects across borough

A Bexley Council meeting this week offered an update on various street projects across the borough.

Some are on hold while others should see funding released soon. A bus lane in Erith due in 2019 is now expected before March 2021. Work outside Bexley’s Central Library is also expected before March 2021.

Public realm upgrades at Falconwood shopping parade are resuming after a covid-related pause. Work is also progressing to improve Erith town centre and Pier Square where a “new layout, paving, planting & seating to improve use and
appearance of area”.

Much of the work is funded using ringfenced funding that must be spent on transport projects, or comes from TfL whose bailout deal included an element to spend money on street and public realm work.

A project in Sidcup for “localised widening of route to provide additional lane to traffic signals” at Hatherley Crescent has been deferred. Sidcup is also to see bus stops converted from Hail & Ride to fixed stops on Longlands Road.

Work on areas around Abbey Wood station is on hold, with “final street furniture and landscaping to be installed”. Far fewer trees have been installed compared to renders with services below ground blamed. The borough boundary with Greenwich crosses in the middle of the these works.

Incidentally, this sort of list is rarely, if ever, seen in Greenwich Council meetings. If fact I can’t recall one single occasion of an update like this in meetings such as the Regeneration, Transport & Culture Scrutiny Panel. They are holding a meeting next week with no reports or documents at all. Then again, when reports are given to councillors they sometimes contain inaccuracies with copy and paste paragraphs bearing little resemblance to what is happening.

This isn’t to praise or criticise work in either borough, but a continual lack of information for the public and elected representatives certainly cannot help with informed decisions being made.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Another great Article Murky. Very informative as always.

Yes that is one of the problems with Greenwich Council a lot of the meetings are held in private with a lack of information given to Councillors and the public.

A lot more transparency is needed on Greenwich Council. If it was not for yourself, and other local journalist 853 and Charlton Champion 9 times out of 10 we would not know what is happening in the Borough.

So we thank you all for a job well done. .
