New council homes proposed on former Plumstead leisure centre site

A consultation on plans for new council housing at sites in Plumstead is now open.

One site is Speranza Street at the former site of Plumstead leisure centre. 17 homes are planned here.

There are 17 parking spaces which seems excessive given excellent public transport links nearby and the issue of congestion along Plumstead High Street.

Shared space is evident in render. We all know Greenwich’s parking enforcement is very poor, and while shared space looks good on paper the reality can be quite different in certain instances. I once lived on a shared space street, and cars simply park right up against homes in any space available. Opening your front door to a car right outside was not unknown. Space for children to play is reduced.

Shared space in Kidbrooke. Street sign didn’t last long.

A high ratio of parking space also contravenes Greenwich policy on reducing car ownership and congestion.

Parking at other recently built homes has been a continual problems in recent months:

The homes are part of 750 included within the Greenwich Builds project providing new council housing. In recent weeks news has emerged that those in emergency accommodation has risen once again to 1446 with 20,000 on the housing waiting list. The authority has needed to find an additional £3.8 million to fund emergency housing given a lack of social homes.

Private renter increase from 2014 to 2020

Right to Buy has continued to see stock levels reduce.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Also 2 council houses planned on Blithdale Road. Good to see councils building again.

  • You can always tell when it is a young able bodied person who writes about the closeness of parking spaces not needed because of nearby public transport! They don’t think about it being necessary for disabled and/or elderly drivers to park close to their home!
