New Covid cases rise sharply in Greenwich borough

Data released last night and today continue to point towards London heading towards Tier 3 as cases, hospitalisations and deaths rise.

In Greenwich borough the weekly growth in new cases is up to 37.7 per cent.

UPDATE: 10/12 – The rise is now up to 55.3 per cent today from 37.7 per cent yesterday in figures out in the past 20 minutes.

Across London new figures reveal people testing positive for COVID-19 in London was reported as 2,550.

In addition:

“On 08 December 2020 there were 1,666 COVID-19 patients in London hospitals. This compares with 1,548 patients on 01 December 2020.”

What is worrying is these increases date mainly from infections caught during lockdown, and there are fears they could now increase with shops reopened:

“In the most recent week of complete data, 28 November 2020 – 04 December 2020, 16,455 cases were identified in London, a rate of 184 cases per 100,000 population. This compares with 13,857 cases and a rate of 155 for the previous week.”

Authorities are advising people remain careful and follow social distancing to stabilise and then reduce cases and avoid Tier 3 measures.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • On my train journey last night about half the people didn’t have masks. No staff as ever to monitor.

My prediction is a further lockdown until the vaccine is taken by further people. From January I expect especially if Brexit causes problems and delays with goods (the current mess at ports looks like spreading too) to keep things sort of under control

  • Mass testing for secondary schools in London & Kent just announced…

“Looking into the detail, the testing results and survey shows us that by far the fastest rise is among secondary school age children 11-18 years old, while the rate among adults in London is broadly flat. But we know from experience that a sharp rise in case in younger people can lead to a rise among more vulnerable age groups later.”

    • That seems to contradict the chart I saw earlier on age range increases.

    • That’s why hospital admissions are so important, and they are rising

  • I live next door to my old school which is Shooters Hill Sixth Form College. Obviously of the age group with rising infections. Three or four times every day students gather in the street in large groups. Few masks. No social distancing. Others sit four or more in a car. Hardly surprising if cases are rising.

  • This rise is expected to happen. There’s more and more test stations that are popping up all over the place. The more and more people getting tested. There’s two test centres I know that’s in Greenwich area alone… One test centre at the o2 in the car park and another that’s down near by the National Maritime Museum.
What doesn’t help, I’ve witnessed it myself, people coming out of these test centres and then jumping on public transport straight after.
Many of people went straight out of the centre and jumped on the train, another group stood near people at the bus stop with people walking passed they then boarded the bus… They don’t know there outcome of there test results there and then. It’s enviable its going to rise. Proving that testing is proving nothing other then more statistics of positive results and raising cases. This is going to go on forever at this rate.
More test centres open, the higher and faster the raise of positive tests because of more and more people getting tested frequently, the more people using public transport to get back home possibly infecting more passengers on the way back home proving that cases are going to keep rising and rising.
As for the vaccine working… not a chance. For another year almost where all to still follow the same rules and procedures. Hands, face, space. No mixing with other’s or family again… But you can mix at work, school, bus/train journeys, in shops. It’s not going to change a thing.

    • Hospitalisations are also rising thus not just a greater number of tests.

    • The only test centres in car parks I’ve seen are drive through.

For those without a car you request a test kit to be sent your home. You do the test and then post it in one post boxes with an NHS priority label.

  • I predict we will still be in and out of lockdowns this time next year! There are still far too many Covidiots who don’t think the rules apply to them, won’t wear masks or keep their distance and will refuse the vaccine?
Greenwich schools closing a week early mean twice as many parents dragging their children round the shops, and some will be panic buying because the media banging on about shortages? Merry Christmas……Bah Humbug!

  • How do you think we can afford more lockdowns? They make people poorer, and before you call people Covidiots there may be a reason why people can’t wear mask ax including myself, I thought we were in this together? I’m not a Covidiot I’m just a worried citizen who’s lost his flat and job thanks to endless lockdowns and restrictions

  • Yesterday I was at the Tesco in Woolwich at around 14:00 trying to avoid most people by going at that time.

It was absolutetely packed!!! And a fair number of people consistently did not wear their masks correctly/or at all.
I’m flabbergasted by this, we are supposed to be tier 4 now so why isn’t this enforced by the police at all?
Once again it’s big words from Westminster, but nothing is being done about it…

(I know I should be out as well, but that’s the sole reason I went on a Monday afternoon, to get all the shopping done until the new year.)
